M-Ledger: Then and Now
M-Ledger was an app designed to help you track your M-PESA transactions. It was birthed in 2013 during Safaricom's Appwhiz challenge, and ended up being so popular, it was absorbed into the main company, where it would find a natural home.
In 2020, it disappeared.
What was Safaricom M-Ledger?
The Safaricom M-ledger app allowed users to categorize, track, filter and find categories by their paybill numbers.
Before the M-PESA app, and the mySafaricom app, the only way to interact with M-PESA was the sim toolkit. M-ledger allowed users to visualise transactions by category, by sender and receiver.
For the time, it was really quite a revolution.
Why was the M-ledger app popular?
M-ledger was loved for its simplicity and accuracy.
What Happened to the Safaricom M-Ledger App?
It was sunset in 2020
The M-Ledger app was shut down to be absorbed into the mySafaricom app, with the promise of integrating the functionality into the new app.
However, the new app never managed to capture the kind of value add that M-Ledger offered. No spending graphs, no filtering, no categorization. It was a big step back.
